D2B Optical Fibre Interface for Retaining the Factory Amplifier - Mercedes-Benz
Description:
If you are replacing the head unit in a Mercedes-Benz that has the D2B optical bus system (for example, Audio 10, Audio 30, Comand 2.0 and Comand 2.5), you may need this interface to allow the new radio to send its audio to the factory fibre optic amplifier, usually a Bose system. This saves having to rewire the car and fit a new amplifier and / or speakers. The interface takes the stereo RCA output from your new radio and feeds it into the D2B fibre optic ring. Please note that any other devices on the D2B network will not function, and you may need to bypass them to close the ring.
Key Features:
- Keeps the Factory Amplifier: Feeds your new radio's audio into the original D2B fibre optic amplifier, so the original speakers and amplifier stay in use.
- Stereo RCA Input: High quality audio via stereo RCA (AUX-IN) from your new radio.
- Suits D2B Systems: For vehicles with the original D2B optical bus system, such as Audio 10, Audio 30, Comand 2.0, Comand 2.0 W220 and Comand 2.5 head units.
- Wake-Up Wire Connection: Connects to the car's D2B wake-up wire so the ring switches on and off with the vehicle.
- Balance Control: Note the fader will not work, though you can still use the balance.
How It Works:
- The original D2B system sends digital audio around a fibre optic ring to the amplifier.
- A new aftermarket radio has no D2B output, so this interface converts the radio's RCA audio into a D2B signal for the original amplifier.
- The ring must stay complete for the system to work, so any removed D2B components must be bypassed. Our D2B fibre optic inline connector can be used to close the ring.

Check Your Vehicle Before Ordering:
- This interface is for D2B fibre optic amplified systems only. It is NOT compatible with MOST fibre optic systems (Comand APS NTG1, NTG2, NTG2.5, NTG3, NTG3.5, NTG4 onwards or Audio 50 APS), so see our other interfaces.
Wiring Connections:
- Yellow: +12V battery (constant power).
- Black: Ground (GND).
- Red: Switched +12V, from ACC or from the new radio's antenna / remote output.
- Blue: D2B wake-up. Connect to the D2B wake-up wire in the car. DO NOT connect this to anything else other than the original Wake Up line.
- RCA (Red / White): AUX-IN. Connect to the RCA pre-outs on your new radio.
Warning: Do NOT connect the blue D2B wake-up wire to the radio's +12V remote output. This will destroy the interface and void the warranty.
Wiring Reference for Vehicles With the Original CD Changer Connector:
- Vehicles with Comand 2.0 / 2.5: Pin 5 is ground (GND) and pin 6 is +12V switched power (clamp 15 ACC).
- Vehicles with Audio 10 / Audio 30 (10 pin ISO connector): Pin 5 is +12V switched power (clamp 15 ACC) and pin 6 is ground (GND).
- Note that pins 5 and 6 are reversed between the two systems, so check your connector and the diagram before connecting.
Installation Guide:
- 1. Plan: Check that your vehicle is D2B and has a fibre optic amplifier. Locate the amplifier, usually in the boot or under a seat, and the D2B fibre optic connections.
- 2. Prepare: Switch off the ignition and disconnect the battery. Remove the original head unit following the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
- 3. Locate the Wake-Up Wire: Find the D2B wake-up wire on the original head unit or CD changer connector, usually blue / black, which connects to every module on the ring. Use the connection diagram in the instructions.
- 4. Connect the Power: Connect the yellow wire to constant +12V, the black wire to a good ground, and the red wire to switched +12V (ACC) or the new radio's antenna / remote output.
- 5. Connect the Wake-Up: Connect the blue wire to the car's D2B wake-up wire only.
- 6. Connect the Audio: Connect the RCA leads from the interface to the pre-outs on the new radio.
- 7. Close the Ring: Connect the interface to the D2B fibre optic ring, together with the amplifier. If you have removed other D2B components, bypass them with a D2B fibre optic inline connector so the ring is complete.
- 8. Test: Reconnect the battery, switch on the ignition and the new radio, and check that sound plays through the factory speakers.
Things to Look Out For:
- Do not connect the D2B wake-up wire to the radio's remote turn-on wire.
- Fibre optic cables are delicate. Do not kink, crush or tightly bend them, and keep the fibre ends clean.
- If the system is silent, check the wake-up connection, the power and ground, and that the ring is complete. You may need to bypass other devices on the D2B ring, such as the CD Changer or original telephone control module.
- Steering wheel controls are not retained by this interface. A separate steering wheel control interface may be needed.
- Components on the original D2B network, such as the CD changer, TV tuner, phone and navigation modules, will not work with this interface.
- Use the specified accessory parts and follow the instructions. The manufacturer is not liable for damage caused by improper installation or use.
Please Note:
- Professional installation is recommended, because this interface needs to be hard wired and is not plug and play.
- If you are unsure whether your vehicle has D2B or MOST, or which connections to use, please check with us before ordering.
- Installation sheet is included.
